The final week of project, we did not manage to complete the website version of attendance taking for teacher. In the end the mobile team worked on some new feature that was given as feedback during our hackathon. They implemented distance checking and also stuff like emailing the teacher from student directly. Overall, the website team did not went as well as we thought it would initially, mainly because of the database.

After last week, I completed the UI and submitted to my team. It was then they realize using ASP.NET is not good, as it is hard to connect to the database which we were using for our mobile which is firebase from google. My team changed alternative to using html and javascripts instead. At that point of time, time is very rush against other things to complete, so I did not contribute much into the new UI design. The other members of the team are working on the database for the website, meanwhile I tried to source out some content to help the team.
I've started to work on the UI of the website, which is one of the simplest thing to start off. As I've learnt ASP.NET, I just used my tutorial as a guideline and also the elements to display on the website for teacher is followed closely to the one we had in mobile. I had full responsibility in making the UI workable for my team. I have no trouble making it as it is quite simple just follow the practicals.
This week, I was told by my teacher that our mobile app isn't just enough. My team was tasked to come out with a website version for teacher to generate QR code for attendance taking. When it first got suggested, we just went for the same concept and functions as our mobile version and started working on it. So basically, this week we those who were not working on mobile that much will be focusing on the website itself, me myself is part of the website team.
This week, we were taught test driven development(TDD). This is the last chapter that we will be tested for common tests which is coming up in 2 weeks time. The TDD helps to verify and check that individual unit of program/module/method logic is correct based on user specifications.
After the week of hackathon, we are doing some sprint review for our project. The review includes what have we done , what we feel about it, energy level, what is next and progress.
The progress is measured by 2 charts, burn down chart and the task chart. We were to record down points that we have previously given for tasks, and calculate how much we had, we done and left. This is the week of hackathon, which is also white space week. We were given Tuesday and Wednesday , from 9am to 6pm just to finish up what we needed for Thursday which is D-day.
We did complete our product with essential functions, but during the presentation, the judges was not very happy about it. We were penalized with many loop holes of the system. Through that, we have taken note down and planning to further improve our application based on the feedback. During this week of FSD and P2 lesson, my group and I are still basically trying to finish up what we need for hackathon. There are some minimum requirement we set ourselves during sprint planning to be completed by this week.
We were working on QR generator and scanner, and retrieving data from database using firebase. All our codes are android studio based and by the end of the week, we managed to finish most of them as next week is the presentation of our application. In Week 3, my group and I did some sprint planning and product backlog. Mainly just writing out and voicing out our opinion what are the features that we are going to work on for the 1st sprint which is the sprint for hackathon. Some of us started working on the basic feature first, in this case my team is doing phone application, it would be the login page and firebase
After my first visit, the perception of the service learning has started to change drastically. The elderlies were very nice to us and they are very chill too. The elderly I was assigned to was so quiet, and he is a very nice guy. Even though me and my buddy could not speak his dialect, he tried to speak Chinese with us. During the first visit, we are tasked to do some light activities like coloring pictures and playing puzzle games, as for a kickstart bonding time for us to know our elderly more. But due to the aging of my elderly, he tends to not like to do much besides talking, it is because his visual is poor so as hearing. So, during the activities, me and partner mostly just talked with him and not do much about the activities. But when we arrive, he must go for a bath and so our time talking always got cut off by the staff there.
During the second visit, the same thing happened again, when we arrive, he must go for a bath again. But this time, we are not assigned or tasked to have any activities and so because the old age of our elderly, he just chooses not to do anything after his bath. So, in the end, we just sat beside him and talk about his life. There's a list of questions that me and my partner have worked out to ask him about, it is to fill up our assignments. There is many type of questions, it varies from when he is born up till what he is up to recently. Like before he entered SWAMI home, what is hobby, occupation etc. The question we draft for mainly is for the poster that we must do to give to them during our very last visit. It is supposed to be a gift for them and let them know we love and care for them. During the third visit, which is technically our last visit to take photos and video to compile them to present for them for the week after. The SWAMI home had planned a family day on this visit. So, we can have joy with the elderly and their children or relatives will come and visit them during this day. There is a lot activity on this day so as other volunteering organization, like from other school and outside organization to help make this even successful. Me and my partner was asked to bring our elderly to play games that other people have prepared for us. Through playing these games we can get goodies bag which will later be given to the elderlies, in the goody bags, there are consumables like water and food and some other stuff. We also took photos together with our elderly and then the photo was placed in a beautiful frame and then was given to our elderly to keep it as a memory. I have learnt that communicating with the S-L beneficiaries is not easy, especially some of them like mine. Because some elderly does not speak the language we do neither we speak their languages, and as for my elderly, he is old and have hearing problem and speaks very slow. Through this service learning, I have learnt that talking to them really have to be patient and cannot be very agitated, because they are becoming like babies again when they are old. Being calm and patient will eventually lead to an understandable conversation and fun conversation between us and the elderly. I feel that personally that only important lesson that I had learnt over interaction with the S-L beneficiaries is that they need a lot of care and love, they look much happier when we visited them, and it brings us joyfulness and happiness too. Very feelings towards a nursing home, because just thinking about them feels lonely. Sometimes if I were to stop doing something and look at them, you can see how sad they feel, and my elderly often tell me he is just waiting to die. After always I hear that from him I will just tell him do not anyhow curse. I think most people at the nursing home probably feel the same as him. Don’t think so any observations that can be linked up with my course. The social issues that I have observed are that students are not as willing to be open towards the elderly. Being antisocial towards the elderly and other stuff. I think that our school should have better activity to help students interact with the elderly more openly, rather than just assigning students to elderly and let the caretakers to instruct at the nursing home. Better and more bonding activities can be carried out to also create easier and happier memories. I think I have done well in at least understand some of his past and able to make him smile occasionally. Despite my elderly’s negativity thinking of waiting for death, me and my partner was about to give him some joy and happiness to certain extend. To improve is probably learn the dialect that he speaks to communicate easier. I think that the school should provide more details about the elderly that we are going to serve and to brief us more in depth about the activities. And our mentor should guide us along the way even though we were assigned and tasked, is to make sure that we have steady progress and not progress into wrong way. Overall more detailed plan must be carried out, I feel that everything is too last minute and not very well planned in general. |
